What the price actually is
$15/month billed monthly; $12/month equivalent on annual billing, which the page advertises as 20% off. Standard includes 625 credits a month; Pro is $35 monthly and Max $95 monthly. Credits buy generation time, so heavy months need top-ups.
The usage this is priced against
The included 625 credits, roughly two minutes of finished generated video. Runway publishes no comparable API for its own models, so the comparison is the honest alternative: running open video weights on rented high-end GPUs.
Someone using it half as much sees double the multiple. The assumption is the argument — if you disagree with it, the number below is not about you. Change it in the calculator.
The cost math, in full
Estimated monthly inference cost
Rented high-end GPU at $2.50 per GPU-hour · ~2 minutes of generated video; video models need an A100/H100-class card, not a mid-range one
Rates come from a dated rate card of representative published API prices, not from the vendor. Nobody outside these companies knows what they actually pay; volume discounts and in-house serving both push real costs below these figures, which makes every multiple here a floor rather than a ceiling.
Why this verdict, not the number
Video generation is the most compute-hungry category in this directory, and it is priced here against high-end GPU rental rather than the cheap mid-range card used elsewhere, because a weaker card is not a credible substitute. The models are trained in-house, so the same argument that defends other model-owners applies: a multiple over a substitute that does not produce the same output is a weak argument. Credits also make the price behave like metered billing once you exceed the allowance, which the sticker price hides.
What the price buys besides tokens
- Proprietary model
- Scale & infra
- UX craft
In-house video models plus the queueing and GPU fleet to serve them, and an editing surface around generation that turns clips into something finishable. Open video weights exist and are usable; matching this output is not a matter of renting a bigger card.
What you lose if you leave
The specific models, the queue that returns a clip in minutes rather than when your rented instance gets round to it, and the editing tools wrapped around generation.
The honest cheaper path
Open video weights such as the Wan or LTX families on a rented A100, or ComfyUI locally with enough VRAM. Genuinely cheaper per second, substantially more setup, and different output.
Recompute it for yourself
Recompute this for your own usage
Scaling assumes your usage has the same shape as ours, just more or less of it. If your mix is different — far more output than input, say — the estimate drifts. It is an estimate either way.
