Notion AI

An estimated multiple around ten on light use, for features that are convenient where your documents already live but are not otherwise distinctive.

STEEP

Genuine work exists on top of the API, but the multiple is high for what it buys. A motivated user has cheaper paths available.

§1 · Billing

What the price actually is

Sold as a per-member add-on on top of an existing Notion plan. Notion has repackaged AI between add-on and bundled pricing more than once, so this entry goes stale faster than most — the live pricing page is the authority, not this row.

§2 · Assumption

The usage this is priced against

A realistic rather than heroic user: 25 AI actions a month — summaries, rewrites and workspace questions — plus keeping the workspace embedded for retrieval.

Someone using it half as much sees double the multiple. The assumption is the argument — if you disagree with it, the number below is not about you. Change it in the calculator.

§3 · Arithmetic

The cost math, in full

Estimated monthly inference cost

200,000 input tokens$0.60

Mid-tier frontier text model at $3.00 / 1M input tokens · 25 actions at ~8k tokens of page and workspace context each

17,500 output tokens$0.26

Mid-tier frontier text model at $15.00 / 1M output tokens

2,000,000 embedded tokens$0.04

Text embedding model at $0.02 / 1M embedded tokens · re-embedding changed pages across the workspace

Estimated cost$0.90

Rates come from a dated rate card of representative published API prices, not from the vendor. Nobody outside these companies knows what they actually pay; volume discounts and in-house serving both push real costs below these figures, which makes every multiple here a floor rather than a ceiling.

§4 · Reasoning

Why this verdict, not the number

The retrieval work over a live workspace is real and the permission-aware search behind it is harder than it looks. The multiple is still high for what the average member uses, and the honest description of the value is that the AI is where the documents are. Heavy users move this toward fair; the seat-based pricing means the average member is not a heavy user.

What the price buys besides tokens

  • Distribution
  • Integrations
  • UX craft

Permission-aware retrieval across a workspace is genuinely difficult — answers must not leak pages a member cannot open. The value that a reader actually feels day to day, though, is that it is already in the editor.

§5 · Leaving

What you lose if you leave

Answers scoped correctly to your permissions, and zero setup. Any self-built alternative starts by solving the access-control problem, which is the part people underestimate.

The honest cheaper path

Export the workspace via the Notion API into any retrieval tool and query it with your own key. You will rebuild the permission model yourself, and that is the whole job.

§6 · Your numbers

Recompute it for yourself

Recompute this for your own usage

Your estimated cost
Your markup
Cost per unit of our assumption

Scaling assumes your usage has the same shape as ours, just more or less of it. If your mix is different — far more output than input, say — the estimate drifts. It is an estimate either way.
